Focal Length

If you were to focus the lens on infinity, the distance between the optical center of the lens and the film is known as the focal length. The focal length dramtically affects the photograph's appearance.

A very wide focal length will cause your subject to be lost in the surrounding details.

On the other hand, if your focal length is very long, you risk cutting out the surrounding context of the image.
